Μεγάλη είναι η χαρά της προσφοράς και της ελεημοσύνης στον άνθρωπο με διαστάσεις αιωνιότητας, ενώ η ευχαρίστηση και η ικανοποίηση της ιδιοκτησίας και γενικά των υλικών και φθαρτών αγαθών είναι ευτελής και πρόσκαιρη.
Ο Άγιος Ιωάννης ο θεολόγος, ο αγαπημένος μαθητής του Κυρίου και Απόστολος της αγάπης πάντα έλεγε το «τεκνία αγαπάτε αλλήλους». Έλεγε να αγαπάτε τους άλλους με τα έργα και την αλήθεια και όχι με τα λόγια.
Αυτή η έμπρακτη αγάπη και η ελεημοσύνη αλλά και η ταπείνωση και άλλες χάριτες έβαλαν το φωτοστέφανο στο όμορφο και ιλαρό πρόσωπο του Άγιου Φιλάρετου.
Ο ψαλμωδός της εκκλησίας μας αναφέρει: «Τοις Αγίοις τοις εν τη γή αυτού εθαυμάστωσεν ο Κύριος και δια του Αγίου Φιλάρετου». Το συναξάρι της 1ης του μηνός Δεκεμβρίου μεταξύ των άλλων Αγίων αναφέρει: «Τη αυτή ημέρα μνήμη του Αγίου Φιλάρετου του Ελεήμονος».
Ο Άγιος Φιλάρετος γεννήθηκε το 702μ.Χ. στην Άμνια της Παφλαγονίας, η οποία δέχονταν όπως και οι άλλες επαρχίες της Μικράς Ασίας τακτικές Αραβικές επιδρομές. Ήταν από τους ευγενείς του Πόντου και της Γαλατίας, γιος του Γεωργίου του Φερωνύμου.
Γεννήθηκε την ταραγμένη εκείνη εποχή όπου το Βυζάντιο σπαράσσονταν από την αίρεση της Εικονομαχίας. Είχε μεγάλη περιουσία και στην κατοχή του εκατοντάδες ζώα, βόδια, άλογα και μουλάρια για τις εργασίες του όπως όργωμα και μεταφορές, αλλά και δώδεκα χιλιάδες πρόβατα. Είχε ακόμα 48 τεράστια κτήματα εύφορα με πηγές για να ποτίζει τις καλλιέργειες και 250 δυνατά μελίσσια και πολλούς υπηρέτες.
Η γυναίκα του ήταν η Θεοσσεβώ από ευγενική οικογένεια και θεοσεβούμενη. Μαζί είχαν τρία παιδιά, ένα όμορφο γιο, τον Ιωάννη και δύο κόρες εξαιρετικά όμορφες, την Υπατία και την Ευανθία. Ο ίδιος έμοιαζε με τον φιλόξενο Αβραάμ και Ιακώβ. Και όσο έδινε τόσο πλήθαιναν τα αγαθά του.
Ο θεός όμως θέλησε να τον δοκιμάσει όπως άλλοτε και τον πολύαθλο Ιώβ. Και ενώ αυτός ο άνθρωπος συνέχιζε αδιάκοπα και με χαρά να μοιράζει στους φτωχούς και πεινασμένους τα αγαθά του, ο θεός σταμάτησε να του αποδίδει τα εκατονταπλάσια.
Τα κτήματα του τα άρπαζαν οι γείτονες του, το βίος του όλο το διασκόρπισε με γενναιοδωρία του, με τις επιδρομές των Ισμαηλιτών και με πολλές άλλες αιτίες και οδηγήθηκε σε μεγάλη φτώχια.
Όλα αυτά τα υπέμεινε χωρίς ποτέ να λυπηθεί ή να βλαστημήσει ή να αγανακτήσει.
Στο τέλος του έμειναν μόνο τα μελίσσια του, 250 κυψέλες, δυνατές και παραγωγικές. Και όταν ερχόταν προς αυτόν κάποιος φτωχός, μη έχοντας τι άλλο να του δώσει, τον έπαιρνε, πήγαινε στα μελίσσια, τρυγούσε μια κυψέλη και έδινε το μέλι στο φτωχό για να χορτάσει. Με τον τρόπο αυτό είτε ήταν καιρός για να τρυγήσει είτε δεν ήταν, εξάλειψε όλα τα μελίσσια του.
Ο Άγιος Φιλάρετος είχε και πολλά εγγόνια μεταξύ των οποίων η εγγονή του Μαρία κόρη της Υπατίας, της κόρης του, η οποία παντρεύτηκε τον αυτοκράτορα Κωνσταντίνο τον Στ΄ όπου βασίλευε εκείνη την εποχή στο Βυζάντιο μαζί με την μητέρα του Ειρήνη την Αθηναία. Τους γάμους ετέλεσε ο Άγιος Ταράσιος το έτος 788μ.Χ. τον Νοέμβριο, ο οποίος ήταν τότε Πατριάρχης Κωνσταντινουπόλεως.
Ο Άγιος και η οικογένειά του μετά από αυτό έζησε κοντά στο παλάτι τέσσερα χρόνια χωρίς να δεχθεί να φορέσει μεταξωτά ρούχα και χρυσή ζώνη, αλλά πάντα βοηθούσε τους φτωχούς ανθρώπους και πεινασμένους.
Ο Θεός φανέρωσε στον Άγιο πότε θα έφευγε από τη ζωή και ο Άγιος κάλεσε κοντά του όλη την οικογένεια και τους συμβούλευσε να κάνουν καλά έργα στη ζωή τους, να κάνουν ελεημοσύνες στους φτωχούς και να ζουν ευτυχισμένοι και τότε μόνο θα έχουν θησαυρούς άφθαρτους εις την Βασιλεία των Ουρανών.
Θα σας υποδείξω, τους είπε, έμπιστους αγγελιοφόρους στους οποίους θα εμπιστευτείτε τα χρήματά σας που θα θελήσετε να στείλετε εκεί για να μη σας ζημιώσουν καθόλου. Προσέξτε, τους είπε, να μην μου τα στείλετε με τους πλούσιους αλλά με τους φτωχούς, τις χήρες και τα ορφανά, τους ξένους, τους φυλακισμένους και τους ομοίους τους.
Προείδε ο Άγιος τη ζωή συγγενών του και τα χρόνια που θα ζούσαν στη γη και τους συμβούλεψε να πράττουν έργα αγαθά. Ευχήθηκε επίσης στον εγγονό του και πνευματικά γιο του Νικήτα προσευχόμενος στον θεό να ζήσει το παιδί αυτό πολλά χρόνια και να τον αξιώσει ο θεός να λάβει το άγιον και αποστολικόν σχήμα και να τηρεί τις εντολές και παραγγέλματα του.
Τους ευχήθηκε όλους και ενώ τους ευλογούσε ξαφνικά έλαμψε το πρόσωπό του σαν τον ήλιο και άρχισε να χαμογελά και να ψέλνει: «Έλεος και κρίσιν άσομαί σοι Κύριε».
Και όταν τελείωσε τον ψαλμό, το σπίτι ευωδίασε από αρώματα. Μετά άρχισε να λέει το «Πιστεύω» και όταν το τελείωσε άρχισε το «Πάτερ Ημών» και όταν έφθασε στις λέξεις «γενηθήτω το θέλημά Σου» παρέδωσε το πνεύμα στον Κύριο πλήρης ημερών, αφού είχε φθάσει ενενήντα ετών και με όψη ανθηρή ωσάν τριαντάφυλλο και χρώμα ζωηρό.
